Valentina Vezzali won her sixth individual world title and Aldo Montano took his first as host Italy swept the opening two medal events at the fencing world championships on Tuesday.
Vezzali beat fellow Italian Elisa Di Francisca 14-7 in the foil final, while Montano edged Germany’s Nicolas Limbach 15-13 in the sabre final.
Vezzali has won the individual foil title at the last three Olympics, while Montano won the individual sabre event at the 2004 Athens Games. Men’s epee and women’s sabre are scheduled for Wednesday.
