Her name is Beatriz De la Iglesia Garcia, she is 33rd years old and she is from Andalusia. His name is Pierpaolo Badalucco, he is 36th years old and he is Sicilian. Their adventure started in the 2003, when they decided to leave Spain (where they lived and worked), to move to Palermo (city that Beatrix, as restorer, knows very well). Pierpaolo also has a family Company, between Petrosino and Mazara del Vallo (near Trapani), where he foresees a possible business between Italy and Spain.
So the couple, with the cousins De Vita, founded the society “Terre Sicane”, to manage the 30 hectares of vineyards they had. Pierpaolo said “I looked for some new blends between different grapevines which could better represent the equilibrium between Sicily and Spain“.
So, they decided to cultivate their fields in district of Contrada, Corleo and Delia Nivoletti, with Nero D’avola, and also Syrah, Inzolia, Grillo and Tempranillo (a grapevine very common in the doc zone of Rioja, in Spain).
The first wine, a blend between Nero D’avola and Tempranillo, was called Dos Tierras, a name which wants to underline the union between the Lands, Spain and Sicily. Moreover, Dos Tierras is also a project, which involves visitors, during the moment of the grape harvest and also for the harvest of olive in the close olive groves. “We received a lot of requests, even if we are still waiting for the right moment to start the grape harvest”, explains Pier Paolo.
“Who joined us knows that he/she has to be ready in any moment, because he/she can be contacted in any moment”. The two young managers (who are parents of Beatrice since few months), also decided to realize a photo project to search Spain in Sicily and vice-versa.
The purpose is to underline, even more, the stronger link between the two Lands. The dream of Pierpaolo and Beatriz turned in reality. From a company which conveys 1400 quintal of grapes to a social wine cellar, their company became a wine company which aims to quality and which sells its products in Sicily and Spain.
Beatriz said “After a lot of trying, in vineyards and bottles, we reached the consciousness of the potential of our wines. We always worked close to the oldest workers, because we have a lot to learn from them.” It’s a winning union between Sicily and Spain, and also between innovations and traditions. And may be a day Pierpaolo will also restore the small cellar where is grandfather prepared his Marsala.
