From Cinque Terre, in Liguria, to the pontino Archipelago, from Alghero, to the Gargano, or Coneiro, there are tens of kilometres of beaches in Italy with landslide risks of rock faces, which stretches on the sea. The rocks collapse in Valle Muria, Lipari (caused by an Earthquake), re-pointed out the risk of collapses which threats a lot of bathers, during summer. Sebastiano Venneri, vice President of Legambiente, clarifies about: “All the beaches with high and steep coasts are under risk. Those are cliffs, very brittle because of their chalky origins. They are everywhere in Italy, which is a Country characterized by an extremely fragile territory” .
According with Venneri, the beaches of levante ligure (le 5 terre), Pontino Archipelago in Ponza, Palmarola and Ventotene are in danger, those are places where landslides made also some victims. “In the risky list , then, I would put Eolie, some parts of the seacost like the Tirrenian coast of Calabria, the coast of Adriatic sea up to Otranto, Apulia and the Gargano. Collapses threat a lot of capes as the Conero and Mount Cofano, near Trapani”.
Other beaches with landslide risks are in Pantelleria and in Sardinia, Alghero and Capocaccia as well as Ischia in the Naples golf, or Amalfi and Sorrento coasts. “In those last examples we have also to add the human stupidity, which weighted down these fragile coasts turning into a cement jungle, never mind if legal or abusive ”. According with Venneri Italy is a Country which is going to collapse. “In Calabria, an all hill moved to the see, but this is just an example to show the fragility of the territory ”. For him, the problem could only be solved with a good maintenance of the territory. In Italy, we intervene to realize streets and bridges, but the maintenance of the territory is always the Cinderella of the situation. Moreover, we only speak about landslide risks in the beaches only in summer. In 15-10 days reflectors will switched off and that’s it.”
