On November 11th, at the Conference Centre “La Casa del Sorriso”, in Monreale, the virtual tour of Monreale’s cathedral was showed. It is a virtual reality instrument allowing people “to fly” inside the cathedral and to observe its mosaics. The visitor will have the chance to lift up “virtually”, and to reach a privileged position for admiring cathedral’s mosaics from the inside. A team of theologians, art historians, architects and computer scientists worked on the project.
To virtually reconstruct 6.000 square meters of mosaics required more than 8.ooo pictures that have been taken through a moving, lifting platform allowing to capture excellent mosaics’ images. The “virtual tour of Monreale’s cathedral” will be showed by the Archbishop of Monreale diocese, Monsignor Salvatore di Cristina; the University of Palermo, A.N.I.S.A. (National Association of History of Art’s Teachers), Papal Gregorian University, Papal University of Palermo and the European Design Institute will take part into the event.
